Another fantastic Ryder Cup has come and gone, and yet again after 39 matches in the day the Cup was decided with just one group left on the course. The Staining Lodge Ryder Cup started in 2009 with a tie and in the four years that followed TeamTony won the trophy from 2010-2013. After this years match TeamGav have now won the trophy 5 years running. This year 38 players battled it out in overcast windy conditions. After 9 Greensomes and 1 Singles match in the morning on the front 9, TeamTony took a 6-4 lead. Where Junior member Tom Braithwaite shone in a partnership with Andy Dahl for TeamTony to take the scalp of Jon Wills & Aron Barrow 5&4. Another Junior Member in Zack Doddemeade must also be commended for stepping into the breach at 20mins notice after a late withdrawl to partner Dave Formby in a 4&3 victory over Mick Mackinnon & Nigel Cockcroft. The early afternoon Fourball matches followed and the session finished 5-5, therefore giving TeamTony a 2 point advantage,11-9 total going into the late afternoon singles games. Notably Ian Barr and Steve Harwood turned around a heavy morning defeat to beat Glen Rowe and Mario Chelaru 3&2 for TeamTony, similarly Kate Schofield & Julie Melling got their revenge on John Gornall and Norman Pennington with a 3&2 win for TeamGav after suffering a 4&3 loss in the morning session. However it was the afternoon singles session where all the drama unfolded into a dramatic climax in the final few matches. With just 10 matches left on the golf course TeamTony had lead of 17-12 with the first team to reach 20 points being crowned Ryder Cup winners. However wins from Margaret Sanders, Phil Brown, James Isherwood, Jon Wills, John Spence and an emphatic 4&3 win by Glen Rowe over Andy Heginbotham turned the match on its head, meaning TeamGav now needed just 0.5 points to retain the Cup or a full point to win it outright. TeamTony's Nigel Cockcroft edged out Fran Spence on the 9th to set up more dramatic late drama. All square on the 9th tee Dave Formby closed out a win for TeamGav after Norman Pennington had drawn a difficult lie in the greenside bunker to win the penultimate match 1up. Unaware of the drama unfolding ahead the final match on the course between Zack Doddemede and Lee Hughes finished All Square after the nerves got the better of Doddemeade after being 2Up thru 7, thinking the entire Ryder Cup hinged on the final game as large crowds drew around the 9th green. Once again the late drama only added to what is always a fantastic occasion and an event that always brings together a large number of members and long standing guests in a fun competitive atmosphere. Finishing 20.5 to 18.5 there were plenty of stories to tell in the clubhouse with 5 players on the day winning 3 points from 3 games, well done to TeamGav's Lee Oddy and Dave Formby and TeamTony's Paul Likely, Carl Scott and Tom Braithwaite. We're already looking forward to next years event.
